No matter what your goals are in life, it’s important to dig deep into yourself and figure out why you want what you want. If you know your true purpose, it will be easier to push toward your goal even through the toughest of times. One exercise life coaches recommend to help you push through obstacles and achieve your goals is the “7 levels of why.”

What Are the 7 Levels of Why?

The 7 levels of why is a simple exercise life coaches recommend to figure out the true reasons behind your goals. To do the exercise, you just need a piece of paper and a pen. Begin by asking yourself why you want to achieve a goal. Once you have your answer, ask yourself why six more times, building off each subsequent question.

life coachFor example, let’s say that your goal is to pay off all your debt. Ask yourself why you want to do this. You may answer, “I don’t want to live paycheck to paycheck anymore.” Your second question might be, “Why don’t you want to live paycheck to paycheck?” Continue this pattern, asking yourself for the reason behind each answer, until you get to your seventh question.

Why Is Establishing the 7th Level Why such an Important reason for a Successful Financial Plan?

While the 7 levels of why exercise may feel uncomfortable at first, life coaches agree that it can help you achieve your financial goals. Instead of only knowing the superficial reasons for your goals, you can discover the deepest emotion-driven reason. Once you know that, you’ll be able to push through all the daily obstacles and stay focused on the prize.
