Most of the time, people get in their cars and start them without issue. On the rare occasion when it doesn’t start, there are many potential reasons for the problem. Go through this auto maintenance checklist to check the most common causes.

Check the Obvious First

An engine needs fuel to start the initial movement of the cylinders, so the car won’t start without gas in the tank. Check your gas level before assuming something is wrong with the vehicle.

To prepare for this possibility, it’s smart to keep a small gas can, so you can fill up with enough fuel to start the engine and drive to a gas station.

Look for a Clogged Filter

Even if there is gas in the car, it may not be able to get to the engine if the fuel filter is clogged. The filter can become congested with water, dirt, or other debris over time.

Have the filter inspected for blockages every time you get routine auto maintenance. Generally, it should be changed at least every 10,000 miles.

What Electrical Components Could Be Responsible?

auto maintenanceA dead battery will stop a car from starting, in which case you’ll need a jumpstart from another car.

If the battery has loose wires, corrosion around the terminals, a leak, or acidic stratification from too many consecutive short drives, it may not work properly. Batteries can also simply stop working once they’re over five years old.

Even with a working battery, a car can fail to start due to a faulty ignition switch. If the headlights work, but the engine won’t start, the issue is likely the switch, not the battery.

It could also be the starter, a separate electric motor connected to the battery responsible for setting pistons in motion upon startup.
