Installing patio pavers creates an outdoor entertainment area. If you’re handy, you might be able to complete this project in one day. Here are the steps to follow for stunning, professional-quality results.

How to Create a Patio With Pavers

1. Mark the Installation Area

The patio shouldn’t slope toward your home, as improper draining can damage the pavers and your house’s foundation.

patio paversOnce you’ve established a location for the patio, use wooden stakes to mark off the area and prepare a mason’s line to create a level surface. A mason’s line functions as a large level for the entire patio, keeping the pavers properly aligned during installation.

2. Create the Base

A proper base is a hard and level surface that won’t shift during rainfall. To prepare the land, clear out any weeds and dig out about four inches of soil throughout the area.

Scrape a roughly level surface before laying down the base materials, such as crushed stone or paver sand. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using the base.

3. Install the Pavers

Before you start laying the pavers over the base, measure both the length and width of the patio. Once you have these figures, multiply them to determine the square footage of the area. Add about five percent to the square footage to account for curves and/or atypical shapes.

Next, place the pavers down individually beginning in a corner and working inward. Ensure they fit snugly and avoid large gaps. Measure and cut any corner pavers to the appropriate size using a marker and a straight edge. Be sure to wear protective gear, like goggles and gloves, while cutting.
