While summer may not pose as many obvious dangers to truck drivers as winter, there are still subtle threats that can be even more perilous if you aren’t prepared. Fortunately, you can protect your health by understanding common challenges you’ll face and being vigilant. Here’s what you need to know.

3 Dangers Truck Drivers Face in the Summer

1. Skin Damage

Unfortunately, UV rays can cause wrinkles and even cancer as your skin gets exposed to the sun while driving. In particular, the left side of your face will age quicker, as the right side will be mostly shielded. You may also notice a tan or sunburns developing on your arms and neck.

To protect your skin, rub broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas every day. Use an SPF 60 option, as you’ll have long-term and frequent exposure to the sun. Apply some in the morning, again after lunch, and any time your skin gets wet or very sweaty. Additionally, wear long-sleeve shirts to protect your arms, pants to shield your legs, and a hat to shade your neck and face.

2. Vision Problems

Seeing clearly during the day and night is essential to remaining safe as a truck driver. During the summer, be extra vigilant about protecting your eyesight, as exposure to UV rays can lead to vision problems, such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

While you drive, wear sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays. However, take them off as soon as the sun goes down to ensure that you can fully see the road and other vehicles. When choosing a pair, pick an option that doesn’t obscure your peripheral vision so you can easily see the mirrors, side windows, and other drivers. Finally, have your vision tested yearly to check for eye issues related to sun exposure.

3. Dehydration

On hot days, your truck’s AC may not be enough to prevent dehydration. Plus, you may forget to drink enough while driving long distances. In addition to having a bottle of water by your side and drinking even when you’re not thirsty, eat foods that contain water, such as cucumbers, strawberries, pineapple, and celery.

If you’re feeling dehydrated, have a beverage that contains electrolytes, such as coconut water, as your body will hydrate faster. However, avoid sports drinks, as they have a lot of sugar in them, which can lead to tooth decay, weight gain, and fluctuating energy levels.
