Spring is the perfect time for outdoor activities. If you own an ATV, you may be eagerly awaiting the warmer weather. To get the most out of your vehicle this season, you should prepare all the major components, from the ATV tires to the fluids.

How to Prepare an ATV for Spring

1. Check the Tire Pressure

ATV tiresTire pressure is important for safe handling and fuel economy. To check it, get a pressure gauge made specifically for ATV tires; those made for cars start at 5 PSI and thus may be inaccurate for smaller tires.

Also, look for one with a non-slip grip, and put it on the tire valve after removing the valve cap. Put pressure on it and look at the reading. If there’s a hissing sound, the gauge isn’t on properly and should be straightened.

2. Clean or Change the Air Filter

Engines require airflow to operate properly and to avoid overheating. During the winter, filters can accumulate dust and debris. Give them a thorough cleaning before use. If the grime doesn’t come out, you should swap out the filter.

3. Change the Oil

Oil is another critical component of a functional engine. Throughout the winter, oil becomes dirty and sludge-like. Therefore, you should get an oil change to make sure the engine is properly lubricated before taking the vehicle out for spring rides. Check the ATV’s manual or manufacturer’s website to see what type of oil it uses.

4. Change Other Fluid Levels

From coolant to brake fluid, check to make sure each is at an appropriate level. Instead of topping them off, try draining them and refilling. Brake fluid, for example, can get dirty when left to sit over the winter and lead to rough or slow stops.

5. Inspect the Battery

Even if the ATV starts and the lights work, it doesn’t mean the battery is in optimal shape. Inspect it to make sure there are no fluid leaks and there’s no corrosion around the terminals. If these problems are present, you should get a new battery before riding.
