Today’s air conditioning systems are designed to be quieter than ever, so any odd noises coming from your unit should be suspicious. Here, learn about some of the most common sounds air conditioners make, and when you should call an HVAC contractor to avoid further damage.

Strange Air Conditioner Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore

1. Clanking, Knocking, or Banging

Loose and broken parts within your system, such as a connecting rod, compressor, crankshaft, or piston pin, can cause clanking, banging, or knocking noises. These sounds can also mean the indoor or outdoor fan blades have become unbalanced and are making contact with other parts. Additionally, banging outdoor fan blades might mean they’re hitting a sizable twig or another large piece of debris.

2. Buzzing

However, cleaning issues can cause an air conditioner to start buzzing more loudly, such as a clogged air filter impeding normal airflow within the unit. Loose or off-balance fan blades can also create buzzing sounds, as can loose components, such as screws or grilles. A failing compressor motor can start buzzing as well before the part shuts off completely.

3. Screeching

High-pitched screeching or squealing noises often come from indoor blower motors and outdoor fan motors that are breaking down. Other reasons for these sounds include worn-out fan motor bearings that make metal-on-metal contact with other parts, and a worn or misaligned fan belt.

4. Clicking

Ongoing clicking when the unit is operational could point to a minor obstruction in the outdoor unit fan. However, if it occurs when you’re turning the air conditioner on, it can mean there’s an electrical issue, such as a failing thermostat. You may also have a bent or loose fan blade.
