A screen room lets you enjoy the outdoors without worrying about sunburn, rain, insects, and other natural threats. However, the structure’s still vulnerable to wear and tear as well as substances like pollen, algae, and mold. Here are four maintenance tips to keep your screen room pristine all year long.

How to Care for Your Screen Room

1. Sweep, Mop, & Dust Regularly

You should include the screen room in your regular housecleaning schedule. That means sweeping every couple of days, mopping every two weeks with a cleaning solution recommended by the contractor who installed the room, and dusting all surfaces, windowsills, and fan blades every few weeks. In addition, take off the covers of light fixtures every few months to remove trapped insects.

2. Rinse Away Spring Pollen

To remove the substance, fill a bucket with warm water and some dish soap, and use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the solution on your screens and frames. Rinse them with your garden hose and leave them to air dry. If you still see pollen, repeat the process.

3. Tend to Your Door

Over time, you might find it harder to open and close your screen door. Try using a screwdriver to tighten or loosen the tension adjuster. If the door still gives you trouble, get a new tension adjuster.

You could also use the screwdriver to tighten the screws on the door’s hinges or call a professional for more advanced repairs. If your door starts squeaking, apply some WD-40 or a similar product.

4. Check the Caulk

Most screen rooms require some caulk to fill in gaps that could let in bugs. As the years go by, regularly check the caulk for signs of deterioration. Touch it up as needed to keep insects away.
