Bow ties have long been associated with men’s formal wear, usually reserved for special occasions like weddings. However, they’re quickly becoming a staple accessory among men who want to add more flair to their style than a standard necktie. Before you start donning a jaunty bow tie, though, here’s some advice to keep in mind.

Do:

Know when to wear a bow tie.

Although it’s become socially acceptable, and even trendy, to wear a bow tie for casual occasions, there are times when it’s more appropriate. As a general rule, any time the dress code calls for a necktie or men’s formal wear, a bow tie is acceptable. If wearing a necktie would be inappropriate, then it’s probably best not to wear a bow tie.

Choose the right fabric.

men's formal wearA bow tie can be formal or casual, depending on the occasion. Men’s formal wear bow ties are typically made from luxe fabrics like silk, satin, or velvet. Ties made from cotton, linen, seersucker, and the like, as well as ties made from printed fabric, are more casual.

Let the event dictate the type of tie you choose. A backyard or beachside wedding calls for a seersucker or madras bow tie, while a silk tie is better for a white-tie gala in a ballroom.

Don’t:

Use a clip-on tie.

If you’re going to wear a bow tie, tie it yourself. Clip-on ties are best for small children and detract from the style and formality of wearing one. If you don’t know how to tie a bow tie, there are dozens of tutorials online, or you can get lessons from your men’s formal wear retailer.

Make it perfect.

One of the giveaways of a clip-on tie is perfection. However, men’s formal wear experts say that the “perfect” bow tie knot is actually defined by slight imperfections. The knot should be very slightly lopsided and asymmetrical. This doesn’t mean it should be messy, but just imperfect enough to indicate that you tied it yourself.
