Refined metals can break down and corrode over time, causing cosmetic and structural issues for your property. Luckily, there are ways to prevent or slow down this process, including special care and chrome plating done by finishing experts. Below is a beginner’s guide to protecting your metal belongings.

How It Works

The most common type of corrosion takes place when a refined metal like iron, lead, or copper reacts with another substance in the atmosphere.

For example, a chain chemical reaction can occur between metal and water in the air (i.e., humidity). Iron particles are attracted to water’s acidic electrolytes. This process is known as “oxidation.” The iron’s freed electrons drift away and further react with oxygen to form hydroxyl ions. These, in turn, react with the now-oxidized metal to create hydrous iron oxide — better known by its common name, rust.

The damage can manifest in varying ways. The most typical is uniform corrosion, which occurs over most of the material’s surface. Another frequent issue is pitting corrosion, which creates a hole that goes all the way through the material. This is dangerous as it is more likely to cause structures to fall or break.

How to Prevent It

chrome platingOne way to prevent corrosion is to choose a metal that doesn’t corrode easily, such as stainless steel or aluminum. Otherwise, chrome plating is an excellent finish to put on your items. This plating provides resistance against weathering and can keep metal from corroding for a long time. Other barriers or coatings can be used as well, such as grease, oil, or paint.

If you’d prefer not to plate your metals, keep them dry and clean. Cars should be washed regularly without allowing dirt or road salt to accumulate. For other concerns, you can lay a layer of backfill, such as limestone with underground piping. If you’re worried about corrosion, a finishing expert can work with you to protect your metal belongings.
