Smoked seafood is often seen as a luxury product, but it’s also versatile and can be used in everyday dishes. If you have delightful seafood like wild Alaskan smoked salmon, it would be a shame to let any of it go to waste. Use this guide to preserve your smoked salmon.

How Do You Store it?

Keep smoked salmon in your refrigerator whether or not the packaging has been opened. Store it on the bottom shelf of your fridge, which is the coldest area.

Once you open it, store the fish in its original packaging within a sealable plastic bag to stop it from drying out.

Also, use a sealable freezer bag if you freeze the fish, which will prevent freezer burn.

How Long Does it Last?

wild Alaskan smoked salmonSmoked salmon will generally last for two weeks unopened. As long as you store it properly, it will last for up to one week after you open it.

The use-by date on the packaging is a good guide to how long the product should last. It might still be fresh beyond that day if you store it well, but it’s best to stick to the use-by date to be on the safe side.

You can freeze smoked salmon for up to three months.

How Do You Know When It’s Gone Bad?

Sight, smell, and texture will all tell you if the fish has gone bad. If there is a slimy or sticky film on the surface of the fish, it’s no longer edible. If there is a sour smell or the color has dulled, you should throw the salmon out.
