Your pool filter promotes sanitary water by removing contaminants like leaves, bugs, and dust. These features need to be replaced regularly to maintain the pool’s cleanliness, so here is a quick guide on when to change them.

What Factors Affect Filter Changing Frequency?

Most pool filters will last for about 2,000 hours. Sand filters will require changing every three to five years, while cartridge models should be replaced every year or two.

If you have a diatomaceous earth filter, this unit will require backwashing (or reversing the water flow) every four weeks and new DE whenever you notice the filter is running low.

Families who have frequent guests and pool parties will need to increase filter changing frequency to account for additional dirt, body oil, and products like sunscreen that can clog the system.

Areas near the ocean and prone to high winds may also need bi-annual filter swaps to account for additional debris.

How Can I Tell When to Change It?

If the pool filter has a PSI measurement of 10 or greater, it’s straining to push water through the filter. Often caused by debris clogs, this issue can reduce the life span of the pool cleaning system if you don’t swap the filter swiftly.

When inspecting the filtration system, assess the filter end caps. If these dense plastic materials crack, it’s time for a replacement to prevent the breaks from worsening and clogging the system with tiny plastic shards.

The filter pleats will move closer together through natural use over time. However, if the fabric surface looks fuzzy or the pleats are flat, the system isn’t efficiently removing contaminants.
