Hardwood flooring is durable and elegant. It’s an investment that you’re probably hoping will last you a lifetime. But, what if an unforeseeable event like flooding threatens its longevity? The following guide will prepare you for protecting the surface from water damage.

Why Is Water Bad for Hardwood Flooring?

Wood is hygroscopic, meaning that, like a sponge, its moisture content will depend on the humidity of its surroundings. When it absorbs water, it will expand and lead to warping and an uneven surface.

You might think that water cannot permeate the finish of the wood, but even a small amount can find its way between the cracks or get absorbed by the sub-floor. Drying your hardwood flooring promptly will prevent warping and mold from proliferating in your floor.

How Can You Minimize Damage?

Next, remove any wet furniture and decorations from your floor and, if possible, put them somewhere they can dry. Wet furniture on top of wet wood might accelerate water damage and mold growth.

If you have a wet vacuum, now’s the time to get it out and remove as much water as you can. If not, do your best to dry the area with towels.

To prevent mold, clean the wet area with a hardwood-floor-friendly disinfectant. Beware of chemical-based products that might damage the finish on your floor.

Lastly, use a dehumidifier and fans, depending on the amount of water, to remove excess moisture in the environment and evaporate what’s left in the wood.

What Are Signs You Need a Professional?

If your floor is cupping—meaning the boards are concave or convex—bulging, or buckling, you’ll likely want a professional’s help.

For cupping and bulging, they might sand the floor down to make it even. Also, loose boards will need to be nailed back in place.

For areas that are beyond repair, they’ll likely remove and replace boards. After repairs are complete, specific areas will require sanding and finishing to protect them against future damage.
