Your transmission is a vital auto part that uses engine power, a set of gears, and the wheel axles to make your car move. There are a few different types of transmissions and knowing what you have is important for auto repair and maintenance. Below are the four transmission types commonly found on vehicles.

Different Types of Transmissions

1. Manual

auto partsManual transmissions are controlled by the driver by way of a gear selector on the console and a foot pedal or hand lever clutch. Also called a stick shift or standard, the clutch regulates the torque transfer from the engine. These are the simplest as far as design goes, and because of this, there is less that can happen to the components, which gives manual transmissions their long lifespan. They are more complicated to drive, however, since you must shift gears based on direction, speed, and terrain.

2. Automatic

As the name suggests, the torque converter and gears shift automatically and do not utilize a clutch like a manual. They are easier to drive because you usually only have to choose between Drive, Reverse, and Neutral. Where shifting gears on different terrains and inclines is up to the driver in a manual, the automatic design handles the gear ratio for you, but this means their design is more complicated and contains more moving parts that must work together.

3. Automated Manual

Similar to a manual, the automated manual involves a mechanical clutch, but the difference is it is not controlled by the driver. Instead, it is automated using hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic controls. The benefit of this type of transmission is that it can have a fully automatic forward gear shift or it can manually shift through the gears by buttons or paddles on the steering wheel.

4. Continuously Variable

Instead of gears, this type of transmission uses belts, pulleys, and sensors for a continuously variable drive ratio, which means no pausing for changing gears. This feature boosts gas mileage since the engine is always kept at an optimal power range. Also known as a shiftless transmission, it also offers a continuous range of gear ratios instead of a fixed number like other transmissions.
