Scheduling routine oil changes is an important aspect of auto maintenance. Replacing the liquid at regular intervals will help the engine last longer. To help you understand how to take better care of your ride, below are answers to common questions about this maintenance task.

What You Should Know About Oil Changes

How does dirty oil affect the engine?

Over time, dirt, dust, metal fragments, and additional particles can contaminate motor oil. When this happens, the liquid can’t lubricate the engine.

The friction of parts rubbing against each other will cause rapid, premature wear. It will also generate heat, which dirty oil can’t absorb. The high temperatures can also shorten the engine’s life span.

How often should the oil be changed?

Foley-Alabama-auto-maintenanceWhen deciding on the frequency of oil changes, the age of the vehicle, driving conditions, and type of oil used should be considered. For an older model driven around town, for example, changing the oil every 3,000 miles might be necessary.

The lubrication properties in some oils might be able to protect a modern engine for 5,000 to 7,000 miles. If you drive in extreme temperatures, take short trips, haul heavy cargo, or brake often, more frequent oil changes are necessary.

What type of oil should I use?

The type of oil engines need varies, so consult the manufacturer’s manual for guidance. The climate should be considered, as this dictates which viscosity grade is best.

For example, thin oils have a low viscosity, making it easier to move in frigid conditions. Full-synthetic oils are often used in modern engines, while synthetic-blend oil can absorb high temperatures to keep the engine cool under severe conditions.

What should I expect during the appointment?

During oil change service, an auto maintenance technician will check the oil level and condition to determine whether it needs to be flushed or topped off. The car is then lifted so that the technician can remove the oil pan, which allows the liquid to drain.

The auto maintenance specialist will also change the filter so that impurities don’t get in the new oil.  Next, they’ll secure the oil pan back in place and replace the oil.
