The idea that there’s a medication on the market that can dramatically change the length, thickness, and number of eyelashes is hard to believe. The inventors were surprised too. What first started as a medication for glaucoma was also found to be a revolutionary way to grow your eyelashes. Here’s a closer look at Latisse®, the medicine that can rejuvenate your lashes within weeks.

How Does Latisse? Work?

Latisse works with the help of the ingredient bimatoprost. Bimatoprost was first used to help treat glaucoma, a condition that damages the optic nerve and can affect vision to the point of blindness. An eyedrop medication marketed as Lumigan® was created to help people with this impairment.

glaucomaDoctors noticed that while the eyedrops were indeed helping with vision issues, those taking the medicine were also beginning to grow darker, fuller, and longer eyelashes. Bimatoprost was identified as the ingredient causing this growth, and now Latisse, which became FDA-approved in 2008, contains a mere 0.03% of it. That’s how powerful it is.

How Do You Use It?

To use Latisse, just apply the medication to the lash line of the upper eyelid once a day. Keep in mind that it has not yet been approved for use on the lower lashes. In addition, it’s important to know that applying it more than once a day will not speed up the process. The natural lash growth cycle is around eight weeks, so the results won't be immediate. However, you should see a dramatic improvement within 16 weeks.
