There are few things more frustrating than locking your keys in your car. However, it's a far more common occurrence than you might assume. Fortunately, all you need to do is call a locksmith to remedy the situation. But to prevent any possible stress, follow these three tips to avoid this situation.

How to Prevent Yourself From Locking Your Keys in Your Car

1. Keep a Spare Key on Hand

locksmithThe easiest way to avoid a lockout is to keep a spare key in your purse or wallet. At the very least, have a spare key at home or with a trusted friend so that they can bring it to you if the need arises.

Also, consider a locking device that secures the key and attaches directly to the outside of the vehicle. However, when using these "hide-a-key" devices, be clever about where you attach them. Conceal them well so that thieves can’t find them.

2. Get Acquainted With Your Key Fob

A key fob is a common hardware device used to start modern vehicles. However, many people just place it in the ignition without really looking at it. Many of today's fobs have a physical key hidden inside that will unlock the doors. Check your fob or your vehicle’s owner's manual to learn how to access the key. Usually, this is done by pressing a small switch or button on the fob.

3. Attach a Bell

Affix a small bell to your car key, similar to the one you'd put on a cat's collar. Be aware that this method requires some vigilance, as you don't want to become so used to the sound of the bell that you don't pay it any attention. Whenever you remove the key from the ignition or the car door, listen for the sound of the bell. If you don't hear it, you don't have the keys.
