Ohio can have some difficult winters, making summer feel like a reward. People become more social during this season, and you might want to host some parties. During this time, your AC unit will keep your guests comfortable. But before the fun begins, you have to make sure your air conditioner is ready for the heat ahead.

Do:

Clean the unit.

Over the winter and spring, dust, debris, and pollen will accumulate in your air conditioner. Inspect and clean the condenser coils and drains.

You should also change the filters, which often collect dust and contaminants. By cleaning the filters, you’ll allow for better circulation and cleaner air to flow throughout your home.

Schedule routine maintenance.

However, some tasks need to be done by professionals. AC units should be serviced by HVAC technicians annually. They’ll not only clean the unit but ensure its parts are functioning. In most cases, having these inspections done are required by the manufacturer’s warranty.

AC UnitHVAC technicians will check the compressor to confirm that the refrigerant levels are normal. When the levels aren’t normal, the compressor was most likely damaged during the winter.

With a malfunctioning compressor, your house won’t be cooled as efficiently, but your utility bills will increase, as your AC unit works harder to cool your home effectively.

Don’t:

Obstruct the vents.

Your indoor and outdoor vents should remain clear, so air flows evenly and clearly. While shade is good for the outside condenser unit, don’t keep plants, shrubs, or trees too close to it, as they might block the airflow.

If you have a tree with overhanging branches, prune them, so they’re at least five feet above the condenser. If you have flowers or shrubs, keep them between one and three feet away from the unit.

Inside, don’t disrupt the airflow by placing obstructions like electronics or furniture in front of the air conditioner.

Use extension cords.

Longer cords will decrease the voltage of your AC unit, forcing the motor to work harder. It won’t cool your home as efficiently and can lead to a premature breakdown of the entire system.
