If you’ve lived in your home for a while, but you’ve never had your roof looked at, you should hire a professional roofing inspector to perform an inspection. When they look over your roof, they can help you decide whether you need repairs or a whole new roof. Here are some signs that you should schedule a roof inspection.

Indicators That Mean You Need a Roof Inspection

1. Stained Ceiling

One of the first signs you might notice if your roof has an issue is a yellow or brown stain on your ceiling. This indicates your roof has a leak somewhere. Most leaks are slow, which means you won’t notice water pouring in so hard you need to put a bucket under it. It will slowly expand and can cause your ceiling to mold or bow.

Eventually, this portion of the ceiling might need to be replaced if the leak continues. Call a roofing contractor for an inspection. They might tell you that you’re dealing with a small leak that can easily be repaired, or this may be an indication that it’s time for a new roof.

2. Moss or Other Plant Life

The roots can lift up shingles, which can lead to holes in your roof and leaks into your home. It can be unsafe to walk on a roof with moss because it can be very slippery and wet.

3. Granules

Shingles can disintegrate over time. They might look fine, but there are ways to tell that there are problems. Check your downspouts and gutters. If you notice granules present, this could mean your shingles are falling apart slowly.

Sometimes, this can be caused by a few bad shingles that just need to be replaced. However, it could also be an indication that you need a whole new roof if all of the shingles are disintegrating at the same rate. A quality roofing inspector will be able to tell the difference.
