Buying a home for the first time is an exciting task, but it comes with a load of responsibilities. Even after you’ve found the perfect place and finalized the purchase, you still have to furnish it. Furniture can be expensive, and buying a whole house’s worth isn’t always feasible. However, with some creativity, you can create a warm and inviting home without breaking the bank.

How to Buy Furniture on a Budget

1. Document What You Have

Before purchasing new furniture, take stock of what you already have. Even if you don't love some of your pieces, they can work in your new place until you can afford an upgrade. Knowing what you already have helps you identify what you need and make smart purchases.

2. Prioritize Purchases

Once you know what you need, set your priorities. You might want to celebrate buying a home with a big dinner party, but you should make sure you have a bed and dresser before investing in an elegant dining room set. Consider your lifestyle when making your list of priorities, and only get what you need the most right now.

3. Don’t Overlook Hand-Me-Downs

When you’re going through the process of buying a home, tell your friends and family. Many of them might have furniture and decor in their basement or garage that they’d be happy to pass on. Even if something isn’t exactly what you want, living with a freebie for a while lets you save up to replace it with something else later.

4. Scour Secondhand Shops

It can take time and effort, but you can often find high-quality pieces that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford, as well as one-of-a-kind items that give your new home some character.

5. Get Creative

Just because a piece of furniture looks rough doesn’t mean it can’t be rehabilitated. It might just need refinishing or some new upholstery, and it will be as good as new.

Don't discount pieces that aren’t in perfect condition. Refurbishing a high-quality piece often costs a fraction of buying new. If you don't find anything you like, look at your existing furniture with a critical eye. A coat of paint or stain could make a big difference.
