Streaks on your windshield are more than just annoying; they can be dangerous as well. They can affect visibility, increasing the risk of an accident. Here’s some advice on how to minimize streaks when cleaning the windshield.

Do:

Wash your car first.

windhsieldWhen cleaning your car, save the windshield for last. Washing the vehicle first removes some of the dirt and grime, as well as dead insects, from the auto glass. It also prevents soap, wax, and other substances from lingering on the glass and causing streaks.

Use clean microfiber towels.

The best way to clean your windshield is with a clean microfiber towel, rather than paper towels or dish rags. Microfiber attracts dirt and debris and holds it in the fibers so that they aren’t dragged across the glass.

Also, the material doesn’t leave behind lint that contributes to streaks. Be sure that your towel is clean and avoid wiping with the same one you used for other parts of the car.

Use vertical strokes.

Clean your windshield using even, consistent up and down strokes. Focus on one section at a time, getting it completely clean before moving on. Vertical strokes make it easier to see spots that you missed and reduce the chance of streaks.

Don’t:

Clean on a hot day.

Cleaning your auto glass on a hot, sunny day can lead to spots and streaks. This is because the high temperature often dries the cleaner before you have a chance to wipe it off. Instead, wait for a cooler, overcast day, or clean your car in a shady spot out of direct sunlight.

Use ammonia.

If you have tinted windows, cleaning them with ammonia-based products can damage the tint. Instead, clean windows with hot water, which is the preferred method of most commercial car cleaners. Dip a microfiber cloth in the hot water and use a vertical motion to scrub away dirt and grime.

Forget the interior.

Dirt and dust can build up on the inside of your windshield as well. As such, cleaning the interior can prevent streaks. Use hot water and a microfiber cloth or a gentle glass cleaner made with alcohol and distilled water.
