Senior dogs may be young at heart, but as they age, they need different dog care than before. To give your pet the best life in their twilight years, check out the tips below.

How to Care for a Senior Dog

1. Keep Moving

Regular exercise, like daily walks, will help your dog maintain strong joints and muscles. Tailor your dog’s exercise program to their needs.

For example, larger dogs may need longer walks or play sessions than small dogs. Avoid strenuous play on hot days—older dogs are especially sensitive to getting overheated.

2. Provide a Healthy Diet

Senior dogs often gain weight easily as their metabolisms slow, so keep an eye on portions to help your pet maintain a healthy weight. If your dog has worn teeth, feed them wet food instead of dry because it’s easier to chew.

Many senior dogs develop arthritis, so adding a daily glucosamine-chondroitin supplement to their diet will benefit their joint health.

3. Work On Dental Hygiene

dog careLosing teeth is a common occurrence for older dogs due to gum disease or damage from chewing hard items. Regular brushing with a pet toothpaste and brush will prevent plaque buildup and gum disease.

If you struggle to adequately brush your dog’s teeth, schedule professional cleanings at the vet or give them special dental chews and treats.

4. See the Vet Often

Seeing a veterinarian is a key component of any senior dog care plan, so schedule an exam every six months. Your vet will monitor your pet’s weight, any ongoing health conditions, and check for developing issues. The sooner a problem is found, the better it can be treated.

5. Add Special Accommodations

To help your dog stay mobile, make some simple home modifications. Add ramps to help your dog go outside, so they don’t have to struggle with stairs. If your dog sleeps in your bed, a small ramp there will be helpful too. Raising their food and water dish higher and providing an orthopedic bed will also make your pet more comfortable.
