How to Teach & Encourage Reading

1. Read to Your Kids

Reading books to your children can help them learn and become familiar with language. Keep them engaged by asking questions about the story and encourage them to ask their own. This will help build communication and comprehension skills.

If your child is past preschool age and has established reading skills, read the story together and have them sound out the words they’re having trouble with.

2. Make Flashcards

Flashcards help your child make quick connections between words and images, and they’re easy to make at home. You can cut out pictures from magazines, glue it onto a card, and write the word underneath the image in large, legible letters. Going through these cards on a regular basis — and continually adding new ones — will help build your child’s vocabulary over time.

3. Sing Songs

Nursery rhymes such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Old MacDonald” are effective songs that can enhance a child’s reading skills. They require kids to track syllables and differentiate between various sounds. You can also make up songs that spell out words that are especially meaningful to your child, such as their name, their favorite color, or their favorite food.

4.  Use Real-World Examples

You can help your child develop their reading skills even when you’re on the go. Have them read road signs aloud when you’re in the car, menus when you’re out to eat, and your grocery shopping list when you’re at the store; there’s really no limit to what you can do.
