Whether you’re a dog owner or you live in a neighborhood with pets, it’s important to stay vigilant. A run-in with an aggressive dog can lead to bites and altercations that require the assistance of an injury lawyer. Here’s what you should know to help you avoid a potentially dangerous incident.

A Safety Guide for Handling Aggressive Dogs

Why Are Some Dogs Aggressive?

Dogs can show signs of outward aggression for myriad reasons. Anxious dogs bark, lunge, and bite to defend themselves against perceived threats.

This could be the result of past trauma, an unhealthy living situation, a territorial nature, or a fear-driven instinct due to a lack of proper socialization. While the reasons can vary, injury lawyers encourage individuals to know the signs of aggression, such as growling, barking, snarling, foaming at the mouth, erect ears, and stiff side-to-side movements.

What Should You Do to Avoid a Dangerous Encounter?

Goshen-LawyerWhen you’re walking or running on the sidewalk, in a park, or on a hiking trail, be mindful of the dogs you’re around. Avoid surprising a dog or catching them off guard, as this can lead to an instinctual reaction to attack.

Refrain from approaching an unfamiliar dog without permission from the owner. When you interact with the canine, hold your hand out with the palm facing down and allow the dog to smell you before attempting to pet them.

If an aggressive dog threatens you, resist the urge to run. Instead, try to lower yourself to the ground and curl into a fetal position. Direct eye contact can be perceived as a challenge, so look downward and speak in soft, soothing tones to reassure the canine you have no intention of hurting them.

Lastly, if a dog bites you, try not to jerk away. Do your best to remain calm and wedge something such as a purse, bag, or jacket between you. Hitting or pulling can exacerbate the situation and lead to additional injury to you and the animal.
