A gurgling sink can be caused by a couple of different problems, with each problem requiring a different solution. Before you call a plumber, you may want to try to identify the issue on your own. This overview explains what could be causing that gurgling sound and how to fix it.

What Causes Your Sink to Gurgle?

plumberThe primary cause of a gurgling sound coming from your sink is a clogged pipe. As you prepare meals and wash dishes, small bits of food may get flushed down the drain, and that’s harmless if they can make their way through your pipes. If they get caught in the pipes, they’ll create an obstacle that traps other food. Over time, this blockage will prevent the water from draining properly. Even before it causes a drainage problem, you may observe air bubbles coming from the drain when you empty the water in your sink.

Another common cause of a gurgling sink is a blocked vent pipe. The vent pipe is a smaller pipe that’s connected to your drainpipe and intended to vent sewer gas. While the drainpipe leads into the underground plumbing system, the vent pipe reaches up through your roof and allows sewer gas to be vented into the air. Unfortunately, twigs, leaves, and other debris can get caught in this pipe and may prevent sewer gases from being pushed outside. As a result, the gases back up and reenter the drainpipe, causing the air to flow backward and create the gurgling sound you hear in the drainpipe.

What Can You Do to Fix the Problem?

plumber lakevilleBefore you call a plumber, you may want to try fixing the problem yourself using a chemical drain cleaning solution. When using any chemical product, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and to wear personal protective equipment, such as goggles and gloves. If the problem is an obstructed drainpipe, the chemical may be enough to flush the food out of the system.

A larger blockage may require using a plunger in addition to the chemical solution to help work the blockage free. Keep just enough water in the sink to cover the plunger’s suction, then work the plunger up and down vigorously. The blockage should break up after only a few minutes.
