Plumbing emergencies are scenarios that either can’t or shouldn’t be ignored. Otherwise, serious and potentially irreversible damage to the system—or the structure surrounding it—will occur. Here are some of the most common scenarios that warrant a call to an emergency plumber.

When to Call an Emergency Plumber

1. When a Pipe Bursts

If a pipe bursts, significant flooding will result. Whether the water pools inside or outside the property, however, will depend on the location of the burst. Some of the most common causes of burst pipes include frozen water, snaking tree roots, and excessive corrosion.

Changing environmental conditions like erosion that place added pressure on the underlying plumbing system can also cause pipes to burst. If you experience low water pressure, hear rushing water, or see strange puddles that don't evaporate, call a plumber as soon as possible. If a pipe starts flooding the interior of your home, turn the cut-off valve to mitigate damage until the plumber arrives.

2. When All the Water Stops Flowing

plumbingIf none of the faucets or appliances in your home are getting any water, your home is facing a significant plumbing issue. After confirming that the utility department hasn't turned off the supply for maintenance, call a plumber. When water stops flowing to an entire property, it’s often because the pipe leading from the water meter has been damaged. The sooner you locate the problem, the sooner a team can come out and repair it, so your family has water again.

3. When Wastewater Fails to Drain Properly

If your home fails to divert wastewater away, call a plumber sooner rather than later. For example, if you notice murky puddles or soggy soil on your property, it may be indicative of a blocked sewer line. Other signs include gaseous odors around the property and overflowing toilets when draining sinks, showers, or tubs. Failing to address such an issue promptly will eventually result in a sewage backup, which essentially means all the wastewater will flood your home.
