Although fuel is your car’s most important fluid, there are others that it needs to run efficiently. These essentials should be checked regularly, and you can refill them yourself with products from an auto repair shop. Here are a few of the fluids your car needs.

3 Vital Fluids for Your Car

1. Transmission Fluid

This fluid lubricates the gears and clutches in your transmission to prevent wear. When fluid levels are low, you’ll have difficulty shifting gears and accelerating. Check the fluid’s quality by dipping your finger in the tank to assess the color, which should be pink. If there’s a red or reddish-brown puddle under your car, you have a transmission leak, and it’ll need to be addressed immediately to prevent the need for serious auto repairs.

2. Engine Oil

A burning smell or grinding noise coming from the engine is also an indication that the oil needs replenishing. Before adding more fluid, check if there’s dark brown liquid dripping under the front of your car. This likely means you have a leak.

3. Brake Fluid

Hydraulic car brakes use the fluid to build pressure in the system. This pressure is used to engage the brake pads and stop the vehicle. However, the fluid absorbs moisture over time, altering the fluid’s chemical makeup and the pressure it creates. If your brake pedal feels softer than usual when you press it, the brakes aren’t generating enough pressure. Check the fluid every two years or according to manufacturer recommendations.
