Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects approximately 3 to 6% of the adult population in the United States. The condition is characterized by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, which runs from the palm to the forearm. Learn how to recognize and address this painful condition with orthopedic care in the guide below.

Causes

The carpal tunnel is a passageway that runs about an inch across the wrist and protects the median nerve and the fingers’ tendons. When the tunnel narrows or the tissues around the tendons swell, the nerve is put under pressure.

Some common causes include:

  • Wrist injuries like a fracture or sprain
  • Repeated movements, such as typing on a computer keyboard or using vibrating hand tools
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • A cyst or tumor in the tunnel
  • Diabetes

Symptoms

Symptoms usually start gradually in the dominant hand with a tingling or numbness in the fingers, particularly the index, middle, and thumb. The fingers may feel swollen even if there is no visible swelling.

The pain or tingling may travel up the arm and wake you at night. The affected hand may feel weak or clumsy, and you may drop items.

Symptoms will only get worse over time, even if they come and go in the short-term. Nerve damage may occur, which affects your ability to move your fingers or distinguish between hot and cold.

Prevention & Treatment

honolulu orthopedic careIf you have a job or condition that puts you at a higher risk for carpal tunnel syndrome, prevention is important. Maintain correct posture and wrist position during the day, and take frequent breaks.

If you notice the symptoms, seek early diagnosis and treatment to slow or stop the condition’s progression. Orthopedic care treatments may include wearing a splint, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, practicing nerve gliding exercises in physical therapy, changing your lifestyle, getting steroid injections, or undergoing surgery.
