Teaching your child to read is a rewarding process. It isn’t always easy, and you may have to get creative to help your child discover their potential. There are many kinds of preschool reading games that you can play to help them learn. Here a few favorites that your kids are bound to enjoy.

What Are Some of the Best Reading Games to Play With Young Children?

1. Guess the Word

This game is a fun and interactive way to help your child understand the building blocks of words. Write down some words on flashcards and place them in a small bucket. Then, have your child pull out a flashcard without telling you the word that’s written on it.

From there, ask your child different questions to discover the word that’s on the card. You might ask how many letters are in the word or if the word contains certain vowels to help your child identify these characteristics.

2. I Spy (Word Version)

Kids enjoy playing the traditional version of I Spy, where they try to spot an item that you see as you give them clues. You can turn this classic into a preschool reading game by focusing on words instead. For example, if you see a stop sign on the road, you could say, “I spy a word that begins with the letter ‘S’,” and have your child guess the word.

3. Word Hopscotch

Then, give your child a word and have them hop on each square to spell it out. If you have several children, you can turn this into a team game where multiple kids work together to spell words.

4. Photograph Storytelling

Help your child learn more about the world around them by describing it. Look through photographs together and have your child explain what is happening in the picture with lots of detail.

Encourage them to describe what the scene looks, smells, and sounds like, and to point out small details. This simple exercise is a way to expand your child’s storytelling abilities.
