If you’ve recently invested in a vinyl siding installation, you’ll want to preserve its condition. However, while it’s a durable material, what can you do to help vinyl last even longer? Below are some tips on how you’ll be able to make the most of your new investment.

3 Tips for Maintaining Vinyl Siding

1. Wash Regularly

Compared to other siding materials, vinyl is known for being low-maintenance. However, it doesn't hurt to clean the surface and prevent mild discoloration. About once a year, hose down your vinyl siding to eliminate dirt, grill grease, and other residues. For more stubborn areas—such as underneath a leaky gutter—use a long-handled brush and a mild soap to rub away the staining. Then, rinse and allow the siding to air dry.

2. Trim Back Trees & Other Vegetation

While they won’t do much surface damage, strong winds during a thunderstorm could knock branches into your home, causing your vinyl planks to crack. At particularly rainy times of the year, the natural pigment in a plant or flower could also run down your siding.

3. Look for Signs of Damage

After a new vinyl siding installation, make it a point to walk around your home and inspect the siding up close once a month or two. If any planks seem to be falling off or pulling away at the corners, you’ll want to have these replaced right away. Otherwise, they might be ripped off during a harsh storm. Also, keep an eye out for green or orange streaks—these might indicate a leak coming from inside your house, damaging your vinyl siding.
