Storage units are an excellent way to free up space in your home, whether you're moving or reorganizing. But if you're storing valuables, such as upholstered furniture, there are a few precautions you should take to avoid damage and ensure the safety of your belongings. Use the guide below to learn the do’s and don'ts of storing your upholstered furniture.

Do:

Use protective covers.

Prevent dust, debris, and moisture, from damaging your upholstered furniture by covering or wrapping each item with plastic sheeting or furniture covers. To provide complete coverage, lay plastic on the floor of your storage unit to prevent moisture in the concrete flooring from seeping into wooden legs, or sensitive fabrics over time.

Deep clean items before storing them.

storageBefore you store your items, take extra care to ensure they are thoroughly cleaned, removing dust, dirt, crumbs, and any additional debris or residue that may have accumulated in the fabric or beneath any cushions.

Removing dirt and grime is essential because these substances can break down in the fabrics over time, becoming sticky, staining, and degrading fine materials and wood finishes.

Don't:

Store heavy items on top of upholstery.

It's not uncommon to want to maximize the space in your storage unit by stacking items on top of each other. However, delicate fabrics, wood, and the soft batting beneath your upholstery can compress after extended periods, damaging supports and leaving permanent indentations in soft materials.

If necessary, only stack soft items such as pillows, bedding, clothing, or other lightweight materials.

Place furniture directly on the ground.

Floor dampness can cause damage to the legs, feet, and fabric of your upholstered furniture. To prevent this, keep furnishings from making direct contact through the ground. If possible, create a raised platform with pallets,  bricks, or cinderblocks. You should also avoid placing your furnishings directly against the wall. Ensure a minimum of three inches between your item and surrounding surfaces.
