Whether it’s for happy hour or dinner, figuring out what kind of wine to drink isn’t always easy. After all, there are thousands of varietals from which to choose. If you’re overwhelmed by the decision, knowing the basics behind red and white varieties can help you narrow down your options. Here’s a quick guide to how reds and whites compare and when you might want to choose them.

Red Wine

How It’s Made

Red wine is made with red or black grapes. First, the grapes are crushed to form a pulp that includes the skins. This pulp is then fermented and aged in a special container, such as an oak or concrete barrel.

Next, the wine goes through an acid conversion process that helps round out the tart flavor. Finally, the sediment is removed, and the resulting liquid is filtered, bottled, and stored.

Reds are usually more full-bodied. Some may have a chocolate-like tannin flavor to it, such as Merlots. Others may be spicy, such as Zinfandel. Not all varieties are bold and heavy, however, as some—like Pinot Noir—offer up a light, fruity profile.

Health Benefits

Grape skins used to produce reds contain resveratrol—a unique micronutrient that is suggested to reduce blood pressure, serve as an antioxidant to defend against cancer, and fight against bacteria. These benefits also indicate that red wine may help prevent heart disease.

White Wine

How It’s Made

White wine is produced using either white or red grapes. White only ferments with the pressed grape juice. The lack of skins during the fermentation process is what allows it to develop its white color. Depending on the variety, the wine will either go straight into the bottle after fermentation or be aged and filtered similarly to red varieties.

Taste

Whites are lighter in taste, but their overall flavor components can vary significantly. For example, Pinot Grigio is fairly crisp and dry, while Chardonnay tends to have a buttery, citrus-like flavor.

Health Benefits

Although white varieties don’t contain resveratrol, they still contain some polyphenols that can help the heart. Specifically, the chemicals in the beverage are shown to help strengthen the inside of blood vessels, which, in turn, can improve heart function.
