Your backyard needs regular landscaping to keep the area beautiful and comfortable and to preserve the value of your home. Whether you have a simple lawn and a few shrubs, or an elaborate flower garden, there are some basic tools you'll need for any plant & lawn maintenance. This is especially true if you want to update and refresh your landscape design. Before you get started, stock your shed with the following tools.

What to Use for Backyard Landscaping Work

1. Mower & Edge Trimmer

If you have any grass on your property, a lawnmower is vital. This helps keep the yard from getting overgrown. It can also be useful for cutting down some types of weeds to make them more manageable to pull out. An edge trimmer allows you to reach tight corners and go carefully around the edges of the yard without damaging anything.

2. Spreaders & Sprayers

Caring for landscaping means you'll need to lay down a thin layer of fertilizer, seeds, and pesticides on your lawn. For dry substances, you'll want a spreader. One with a hand crank will work for most circumstances. For liquids, you need a sprayer to distribute the liquids evenly across your grass.

3. Shovels

LandscapingWhenever you want to plant a new flower or remove an old shrub from the backyard, you'll want a shovel to move the soil. It helps to have several sizes and shapes. Shovels with pointed or rounded noses make it easier to dig downward, especially in the hard ground. Square shovels are great for removing the top layer of soil. A smaller option like a hand trowel helps with planting seeds and seedlings.

4. Rakes

When your trees and other plants drop debris in your yard, a rake is the most efficient way to clean it up. A lawn rake or leaf rake has a fan-shaped array of flexible tines, so it's gentle on the grass. You can use a different type of rake called a bow rake for leveling ground, spreading mulch, and loosening packed soil.
