Germs are ubiquitous, so you can't avoid them completely. At a time when everyone wants to be more vigilant about basic hygiene and sanitation to avoid illness, it's important to get your family on board with some simple, practical steps. This guide outlines what you can do to stay healthy.

How to Protect Yourself From Germs & Illness

1. Clean Regularly

Germs are found everywhere but particularly congregate on frequently used surfaces in the home. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting hotspots like kitchen counters, sinks, and toilet seats will eliminate germs and stop them from spreading to other parts of your home.

2. Sneeze Into Your Elbow

When you’re sick, one of the most common ways to spread the illness to others is through sneezing or coughing. While your first instinct may be to cover your mouth or nose with your hands, you’ll only spread more germs when you touch objects or other people.

If you don’t have a handkerchief or tissue and there’s no way to immediately sanitize your hands, sneeze into the crook of your elbow instead.

3. Practice Food Safety

The kitchen tends to have the most bacteria in a home. Sponges, rags, sinks, fridge door handles, food preparation surfaces, and items used to handle raw meat are all breeding grounds for bacteria like salmonella and E. coli. 

Avoid these bacteria by washing your hands before and after preparing meals. Wash cutting boards, dishes, and utensils used for raw meats as well.

Don’t mix cutting boards; designate one for meats and another for produce to avoid cross-contamination.

4. Wash With Hot Water & Soap

Whether it’s a full shower or just a hand wash, hot water and soap are the most basic and effective weapons in the fight against germs. Water should be at least 100°F to fully disinfect hands. While antibacterial soaps might seem more beneficial, plain soap is just as effective.

Wash your hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing or coughing.
