From seasonal decorations to family heirlooms, many households have the need to store fragile items for the majority of the year. Yet, one of the biggest challenges of these instances is ensuring that the belongings are properly protected when not in use. Before moving any breakables to your storage unit, follow these three tips to keep them safe.

3 Tips for Storing Breakables

1. Cushion Each Piece

Fortunately, the key to reducing the risk of chips, cracks, and shattering upon impact is adding a protective barrier. Utilize packing paper or bubble wrap to completely cover each piece before adding them to the storage box or tub. The cushioning provided helps absorb impact from movements, whether intentional or accidental.

2. Fill Empty Space

It's common to not want to overpack a container before moving it to the storage unit. However, empty space leaves room for fragile items or their heavier counterparts to move around, which increases the risk of breakage. Prevent damage by reserving the bottom of the box for the heaviest items and fill any open space with soft items, such as packing peanuts, clothing, or towels.

3. Label Containers

All personal storage containers should be moved with care, but ones that contain fragile pieces need to be approached with extra caution. Ensure that you know the location of breakables by labeling each box. Make sure that the label faces outwards so that it's easy to see and identify. Additionally, place containers with fragile items on top and not below other boxes.
