Whether you frequently work from home or are entirely new to this experience, there are many ways to maximize your workday and maintain productivity. At the same time, you don't need to sacrifice comfort or any of the personal freedoms that come from working at your own desk. Here are a few tips for effectively working from home.

How to Effectively Work From Home

1. Stick to a Schedule

Routine establishes positive habits and consistency. Stick to a schedule as much as possible when working from home. Wake up at the same time every day; work the same number of hours as you would at the office; schedule regular breaks, including a full lunch hour; and shut down your computer and work area at the end of the day.

If you put in more or fewer hours on a given day, add or subtract hours the next day as necessary. Don't under- or overdo it; still maintain a work-life balance.

2. Dedicate a Specific Space for Work

desksIf possible, set aside a home office, den, extra bedroom, or another space specifically for work. In your mind, set a boundary: That space is for work and work only. Outside of office hours, steer clear of this area.

If it isn't feasible to have a totally separate workspace, at least keep one portion of your desk solely for your job. Use an extra computer, tablet, or smartphone for personal browsing. These tips help create a defined barrier between your personal and work lives.

3. Communicate Frequently

Without coworkers nearby, it can be easy to feel isolated. You might also forget to pass along information about a project, client, or deadline. Always err on the side of caution and overcommunicate with colleagues. Send emails, make phone calls, and update shared calendars throughout the day. This keeps everyone on the same page, even when distance keeps people apart.
