Garage doors should be functional and visually appealing. If you’re replacing your current model or are building a garage addition, you’ll need to find an option that fulfills both criteria. Here are the answers to a few important questions to consider before you make your choice.

What to Know About Residential Garage Doors

What are the most common types?

Most models are made from either steel or wood. Steel doors are low-maintenance, and insulated models can be very energy efficient.

Still, wood doors are popular for the attractive, natural texture of their grain. They’re also versatile, as they can be stained or painted to match the rest of the building, and have a wide array of design options that add style and character.

Vinyl, composite, glass, and aluminum are also versatile and popular options.

Can I paint my garage door?

Most materials except glass can be painted or stained. Generally speaking, wood or vinyl types need to be painted before they are installed and repainted every few years to keep them in good condition.

Metal doors can be painted as long as you use a latex paint designed for exterior use. Oil paint will harm a steel door, causing the original finish to bubble, crack, and peel.

How are they installed?

In order for a garage door to open and close as it should, it uses a track system controlled by a series of springs, rods, and pulleys. This control relies on the appropriate amount of tension in the springs. It can take about three to four hours to fully install a new model.

How do I maintain my garage door?

Cleaning it with the hose, a rag, and a bucket of mild detergent diluted with water once or twice a year keeps it in good shape. Avoid power washing, as the intense pressurized jet can damage the door.

Keep the tracks free of debris, lubricate them regularly, and inspect the cables and rollers for damage. Tighten brackets and bolts as needed.
