When you’re involved in a collision, there are several steps you will need to take. It’s important to take the correct action immediately after the crash, up to getting your repaired vehicle back from the auto body shop. The advice below will help you to get a satisfactory result from your claim.

Your Guide to Auto Insurance Claims

1. Call the Police

Once you are safe after the accident, call the police. They will ensure that the reporting of the accident is accurate, and you can submit their report to your insurer. Don’t accept responsibility for the incident or blame the other driver. Leave that assessment to the police.

Cincinnati drivers in minor accidents can exchange insurance information and make an accident report at a police station within 24 hours. However, government advice says that “it is recommended the police respond to all auto accidents and evaluate reporting with the participants.”

2. Get Information

The more information you can get, the more likely your claim will be successful. The first step you should perform is to take photos of the scene of the accident, including all vehicles. Note where and when the collision took place, along with any other details about what happened.

Ask the other driver involved in the collision for their insurance details. Also, write down their vehicle information, such as the make, model, and license plate number. Keep receipts for roadside assistance, and other services that you want to claim, for your insurer.

3. Contact Your Insurer

Once you have calmed down after the accident, contact your insurer as soon as possible. You can find their number on your insurance card or their website, or you may be able to file a claim online. Give as much information as possible about what happened.

The information you should give includes details about the other driver, such as their insurance and vehicle details. Also, provide photos of the accident, information about the weather during the collision, and information given to you by police officers, such as their name and badge numbers.

4. Get Repairs

Your insurer’s adjuster might give you an estimate for repairs when they inspect the car, or you can get an estimate from an auto body shop. The insurer will probably recommend repair shops, but you can choose your own if you want to. Ask your insurance company if they will pay the body shop directly or reimburse you later.
