If you want to launch your career as a truck driver, you’ll need a commercial driver’s license (CDL). However, if you have a record of driving violations, such as DWI, you might be worried it’ll get in the way of your plans. The following guide will prepare you for the process ahead.

What Are the Requirements for a Commercial Driver’s License?

In order to get a CDL in New York, you’ll need to either have a valid New York driver’s license or a CDL from another state.

The type of vehicle you plan to use will determine the class of your CDL. Class A vehicles have gross combination weight ratings (GVWR) of 26,0001 pounds or 10,000 pounds, depending on type. Class B vehicles have a GVWR of 26,00001 or more. Class C vehicles transport 16 passengers or more.

Next, you’ll need to indicate whether you require a CDL for Interstate Commerce or Intrastate Commerce. An Interstate Commerce license includes travel between states and countries. Also, determine whether you’re an Excepted or Non-Excepted driver. Excepted drivers, typically transporting people and farm goods, don’t need to get medical certifications, while Non-Excepted drivers do.

Can You Get a CDL With a DWI on Record?

If you get your first DWI, your driver’s license will typically be suspended for 90 days. Thus, you won't be able to apply for a CDL until your suspension ends. If you have more than one DWI, this period may last a year or longer.

DWIGetting a CDL will often be less challenging than landing a job afterward. Trucking companies have to insure their drivers, and those with violation records will cost them more money. However, if you’re upfront about it and have had a clean record since, you may increase your chances of success.

What Happens If You Get a DWI After Receiving Your CDL?

Commercial drivers are held to a higher standard. For example, while the accepted blood alcohol content (BAC) of regular drivers is 0.08, the threshold drops to 0.04 for drivers of commercial vehicles.

Thus, even if you get a DWI while using your personal vehicle, it could affect your CDL. Typically, drivers lose their CDL for at least a year. Future offenses will lead to more severe consequences.
