1. State License

Every state has its requirements for becoming an agent, so you’ll need to check the specifics in your state. Typically, you’ll need a high school diploma or GED, several hours of real estate classes, and a passing grade on the subsequent test. Additionally, while many states allow those who are 18 years old to apply, some, such as Illinois, require that they be at least 21.

2. Strong Communication & Interpersonal Skills 

real estateAlthough part of the job involves researching and accentuating different properties, the lion’s share of the work is interacting with individuals. If you want your clients to refer their family, friends, and coworkers to you, you’ll need to become an effective communicator.

This goes beyond being persuasive and charismatic. Understanding your clients’ needs and correctly fulfilling them requires being attentive and observant as well. 

3. Self-Motivation

Even though agents typically work for brokerages, it isn’t a standard “rat race” sort of job. Plan to set your own goals and directives. If you’re intrinsically motivated most of the time and love to set challenges for yourself, real estate is the career path for you. Keep in mind, though, that it’s not uncommon to work long hours and on the weekends; most people are looking to buy homes during their free time, so you must be motivated to work with clients on their terms.
