Appliance repair technicians will attest that shaking washing machines are a significant headache. Not only does violent jostling strain the mechanical components—and the walls and floor surrounding the washer—but it also prevents the machine from cleaning clothes thoroughly. If your washing machine shakes during every cycle, try the below strategies for stabilizing it.

How to Stabilize a Shaking Washing Machine

1. Level the Legs

If the machine’s legs are uneven—or the flooring on which they rest is not level—the washer will shake during every spin cycle. Because most washers have threaded legs, adjusting them is as simple as twisting them. Depending on which direction you turn, the legs will either shorten or lengthen in small increments. Inspect the rubber padding under each leg, as well. If they wear down at different rates, replace all of them to make the machine level again.

2. Replace the Struts

appliance repairWashing machines have struts under their frames to serve as shock absorbers. If these components wear down or break, the device will shake. Perform a visual inspection of the washer’s inner workings to determine whether or not you should replace the struts. If you’re unsure how to locate them—or they have more damage than you anticipate—call an appliance repair technician.

3. Repair the Springs

The springs suspend the basket inside the frame so it can move freely during each cycle. If they break, stretch, or uncoil, the basket will no longer be secure. In other words, violent shaking will result. If you have a front-loading machine, you can access these springs through the top panel. If you have a top-loading machine, call a technician to disassemble it, and evaluate the springs.
