A gas fireplace produces a consistent flame with the help of a gas line, emitting no smoke and venting waste and fumes through a pipe that connects to the outdoors. Traditional woodburning fireplaces demand diligent upkeep to remain safe and operational. While gas fireplaces have far fewer maintenance needs, they require occasional attention. Here are a few maintenance tips for this home feature.

How to Maintain Your Gas Fireplace

1. Remove & Clean Doors

Most modern gas fireplaces have removable doors. Carefully lift them out, and lay them on a drop-cloth or layer of newspaper. Spray them with a standard glass cleaner and wipe them dry with a paper towel or sheet of newspaper to reduce streaks.

Once they're dry, return the doors to the fireplace. Wait for at least an hour before turning on the gas line and flame to ensure any glass cleaner residue has evaporated; glass cleaner is flammable and no trace should be left behind.

2. Vacuum the Interior & Logs

If you have vented gas logs that have accumulated soot, remove them as directed by the manufacturer and gently brush off the soot with a soft-bristled brush. If you have vent-free gas logs, only a fireplace professional should remove and clean them.

3. Replace Batteries in Your Remote

Taking proper safety precautions is an essential part of gas fireplace maintenance. Every six months, put fresh batteries in your fireplace's remote control.

If there was an emergency and you needed to shut off the fireplace in a hurry, grabbing the remote might be the fastest way to prevent danger. You don't want to take the chance that the batteries may be dead.
