Your water heater is a necessary piece of equipment in your home. It provides much needed hot water for everything from bathing to cleaning, but just like any other unit, it will need to be replaced over time. Below are five signs that it’s time to call a plumber.

How to Know Your Water Heater Needs Replacing

1. No Hot Water

plumberThe first sign of an issue with your water heater is little or no hot water. Sediment building up inside the tank can interfere with the heating element, which means your supply isn’t getting enough warmth for your needs. When flushes are no longer doing the trick, a new unit is needed.

2. Rusty Water

If you notice that your hot water supply has a rusty color, the water heater is corroding. The anode rod inside your tank is there to draw rust away from your tank’s lining. If your unit is now rusting, though, this rod has reached the end of its life. While a plumber can replace the anode rod to extend the life of your system, once the tank has taken on rust, a new water heater is needed to avoid leaks.

3. Aging System

There is a finite number of years that your water heater will be reliable. Most tanks last between eight and ten years, sometimes a little longer with proper, regular maintenance. If yours is more than a decade old, it is probably time for an upgrade. Check the serial number on your manufacturer’s sticker at the top. The first two numbers are usually the year it was made.

4. Strange Noises

Sediment buildup will cause rumbling sounds when the water heater is in use. You may also hear sounds if the anode rod has rusted and broken off and is now clanking around your tank. Either way, a new tank is needed.

5. Leaks

Over time, the constant expansion of metal parts will lead to weakened areas that can cause leaks. If rust builds, corrosion sets in and will eat away at the tank. These fractures and holes mean water will eventually seep out, which can lead to puddles of water and even a flood in your home.
