One of the most exciting days of spring is when you get to pull your boat out of storage and get it ready for use. Some simple maintenance efforts will ensure that your vessel is ready to work reliably and safely. Use the following maintenance checklist to get ready for a season filled with fun on the water.

Spring Preparation Tips for Boaters

1. Clean & Wax

Your vehicle may have gotten a little dirty after months in storage. Wash it with a chemical-free detergent, thoroughly clean the interior, and wax the hull. That wax will give the exterior its gorgeous shine and protect the integrity of the finish. As you wax the hull, check it for any signs of damage such as cracks and blisters.

2. Top Off Fluids

Add a fuel stabilizer and top off the gas tank with fresh fuel. Top off all your other fluids, including the coolant, power steering, power trim, and drive lubricants.

3. Check the Electronic System

Charge the battery completely, then test it after a few days so that you know whether the battery is holding the charge properly. If the charge is low, then it’s time to replace the battery. Test all electronic systems, such as the lights, sound system, and navigational system.

4. Stock Up on Safety Gear

Check that your safety gear is in prime condition and replace it if needed. Basics to include are a fire extinguisher, anchor, line, whistle, first-aid kit, flares, radio, GPS, food, and water. There should be one life jacket for every person on board.

5. Check Registration

Ensure that all your registrations are up to date and renew them if needed. This includes registration for your boat, motor, trailer, and towing vehicle.
