With summer right around the corner, now’s the time to tune up your air conditioning system. While you should leave the heavy lifting to a reputable HVAC contractor, there are a few tasks you can perform yourself to ensure your home stays cool all summer long.

How to Get Your AC Ready for the Demands of Summer

1. Change the Filters

You should replace the filters in your HVAC system every 30 to 90 days. Even if you don't have any pets, children, or housemates with asthma or allergies, the filters are probably due for changing at the start of summer. HVAC contractors encourage homeowners to stay on top of this task because clogged filters reduce efficiency and force systems to work a lot harder than necessary.

2. Clean the Condenser

HVAC contractorThe condenser is the large unit that’s located outside. After a long winter, it’s undoubtedly due for a cleaning. After disconnecting the power, you can turn a low-pressure hose on the exterior portion of the unit. This gently rinses off the dust, dirt, and other debris that's accumulated over the last few months.

Also, clean the fins while you're at it. Scrape away any caked-on mud with a soft-bristled brush and straighten any bent fins when you're finished.

3. Inspect the Coolant Lines

If the coolant lines—the tubes that run from the evaporator to the condenser—are not insulated properly, the system might burn an excessive amount of energy just to maintain a consistent temperature. If the pipes have any bald patches, apply foam sleeves or insulation tape to keep the system from kicking into overdrive all summer.
