If you're interested in trying a few new sewing projects this year, start by practicing with a serger. This specially adapted sewing machine sews, trims, and seals the edges of your fabric all at once for easy, sturdy seams with limited risk of fraying. You can use this function to sew seams or to make simple, clean hems without all the measuring, folding, and ironing required with a regular sewing machine. This makes many springtime sewing projects quick and straightforward. As temperatures begin to rise, consider the following serger sewing projects.

What to Sew With a Serger This Season

1. Infinity Scarf

Even spring can have cooler days. For springtime wear, choose a light, floral fabric for your scarf. All you need is a long, narrow rectangle of fabric. Serge the long edges to finish them, then serge the ends together to form a loop. You can wear your infinity scarf loosely knotted around your neck, doubled over to make it tighter, wrapped around your head, or in your hair.

2. Skirts & Dresses

Serger Kalispell, MTYou can make a basic skirt with a simple rectangle of fabric. Make your rectangle wider for a pleated or ruffled look, or narrower for a closer fit. Use the serger to finish the edges along the top and bottom of the fabric, then serge the ends together to make a tube. Turn over one end and sew it into a channel for elastic or a drawstring. You can also make a simple sundress with a taller piece of fabric, two ribbon straps, and a channel at the waist or underbust.

3. Table Linens

If you want to take advantage of the warmer weather for a meal at a park, a tablecloth and cloth napkins can add a charming, elegant flair to your outing. Once again, all you need are squares of cotton or linen in the right sizes. A serger allows you to hem the edges quickly for attractive, durable table linens in your choice of colors and patterns.
