If you’re getting ready to move or renovate, you might need to get some furniture out of your home for a short time. Storage facilities provide a convenient solution, but you do need to take some simple steps to protect your belongings before shipping them off. If you need to store upholstered furniture, keep these tips in mind.

Do:

Clean it.

storageIf you leave dust or spills on your furniture when you put it into storage, those materials may settle into the fibers of the upholstery and lead to permanent damage. Before storing, vacuum the upholstery, wipe down any wood components, and clean spills, so it’s ready for use when you need it again.

Cover upholstery.

Once it’s clean, cover the upholstery to prevent more dust or debris from touching it while it’s in storage. Loosely drape furniture blankets over it, so it’s protected but still able to get sufficient air circulation.

Don’t:

Use plastic wrap.

Some people think shrink wrap or plastic offers better protection for furniture. However, plastic doesn’t allow for sufficient airflow, so it can trap moisture inside with your furniture, leading to upholstery stains or warped wood components.

Stack items on top of your furniture.

When filling a storage unit with delicate items like furniture, leave some room in between each piece. Stacking items on top of each other or placing them right up against one another can lead to scratches or other damage.
