The average American spends approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, and the air indoors can often be two to five times worse than it is outside. Breathing air full of pollutants, such as mold spores, dust, pollen, and smoke, may cause some serious health concerns over time, as it is bad for your respiratory system. Fortunately, there are ways to significantly improve the air that moves through your central heating and air system.

How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

1. Clean Your Air Ducts

All the air in your home travels through the ducts on its way to the vents, where it’s blown out into the room for you to breathe. You don’t want your air picking up pollutants such as mold and dust while traveling through the ducts. Have them professionally cleaned every three to five years, or immediately after having any home renovations done that kick up dust.

2. Change Your Filter Regularly

This filter medium gets clogged up over time, and eventually won’t be able to do its job anymore. Replace your filter every four to six weeks, with a more frequent replacement if you suffer from a respiratory health issue or have pets that would clog up the filter quickly with fur and dander.

3. Clean Regularly

Your carpets and upholstery trap a lot of pollutants such as dust and pollen, which will impact indoor air quality. Meanwhile, dust accumulates on shelves and furniture.

Vacuum daily or every other day, and dust all your home’s surfaces at least once a week. Remember to target the often-forgotten spots: vacuum couch cushions and upholstered furniture, vacuum your stairs, and dust the top of ceiling fan blades.
