Since you’ll have less space when moving from a house to a condominium, you’ll likely need to downsize your belongings. Use the following tips to sort through everything and prevent clutter in your new home.

5 Tips for Downsizing Your Home

1. Start With Furniture

You may not have room for all of your furniture after moving. Draw a rough sketch of the condo’s layout, and carefully measure each piece currently in your home. Figure out which will fit best in the available areas, and set the others aside for donation.

2. Monitor Individual Use

Clothing can be a challenge to go through, especially when you have a mix of seasonal items. Evaluate how often each piece of clothing has been worn. If it’s been over a year, mark the item for donation. Have a box nearby to help keep items separate.

3. Clear Out Every Box

movingReduce the number of boxes you need to move by carefully sorting through every storage container you come across in your home. Pile similar items together, and set aside those that are no longer useable. Box the latter up to donate. Evaluate the remaining piles and determine the best form of consolidation.

4. Digitize Pictures & Documents

Rather than allowing hardcopies to take up space, transfer files to the computer. If you don’t have a scanner, borrow one from a friend or family member. Also, use backup software to prevent accidental loss, and carefully label each folder to ensure they’re easy to locate.

5. Factor in Storage Options

Your new place will have closets and other storage space available, so look at how much there is to work with before clearing out your clutter. These spaces may provide an opportunity to keep the possessions that hold sentimental value rather than having to give them up.
