As you’re driving, there’s always the risk that another car will kick up a stone or another piece of road debris and fling it into your vehicle. When this happens, it can result in a chipped windshield. If you don’t act quickly, the damage could spread, but how do you know whether you need a windshield repair or a full replacement?

When Can a Chip Be Repaired?

Usually, small chips can be repaired if you seek prompt service at an auto glass center. As a rule of thumb, if the chip and resulting cracks can be covered by a dollar bill, a repair is possible.

To repair the chip, an auto glass technician will fill the area with a resin. If cracks are present, a hole may be drilled at each end to prevent it from spreading in the future. Once the resin has dried, your car will be ready to drive again.

When Should My Windshield Be Replaced?

That’s because the resin will cause a slight distortion, which isn’t a problem if it’s out of the way but can negatively impact visibility if it’s on the center left. Additionally, if the damage occurred right at the edge of the glass or there are multiple chips, a windshield replacement will be necessary.
