It’s important to choose the right electrician for your electrical installation or repair project. Working with electricity is dangerous, and you’ll want to hire someone who knows what they’re doing. Conducting your research and asking your electrician the following questions can help you get the best service.

What to Ask a Electrician Before Hiring Them

Are you licensed and insured?

All electricians need to be licensed if they’re charging for their services. This ensures that they’ve had adequate training to complete your complex job.

There are licensed master electricians who have been working in the field for at least two years and can perform electrical installation and design projects. Journeyman electricians are newer to the job and can conduct installations. Make sure you know what type of electrician you’re working with.

Of course, insurance is important, too. If they’re not insured, you could be liable for any injuries or damages to your home. Electricians should have at least $500,000 in liability and workers’ compensation insurance.

Will you provide references?

electrical installationAlthough online reviews can be helpful, they don’t always answer all of your questions. Try to have a conversation with someone who has used your prospective electrician before.

Ask for at least three references and don’t hesitate to call them. They might even let you visit and inspect the work the electrician did. Feel free to ask the references questions about their satisfaction with the electrical installation.

What type of work do you do most often?

Ask what type of work the electrician specializes in and see how closely it matches your project. If they mostly do new construction work, they might not be well-suited for a system repair.

However, this doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. Just because an electrician doesn’t have experience completing your specific project doesn’t mean they aren’t qualified for the job. They might have other skills or qualities that will grant your wishes. Discuss the reservations you have; you might be able to negotiate a deal.
